Learn more about stem cells here: www.cordblood.com Elisa Rudgers had a text-book perfect pregnancy with her son, Rydr. Her delivery, however, was extremely difficult. At about 11 months old, Rydr was diagnosed with cerebral palsy, a brain injury that can affect speech, fine motor skills, and the ability to chew and swallow food. The disorder currently has no cure. Luckily, the Rudgers had banked Rydr's cord blood stem cells with CBR, so they were able to try an experimental therapy for the condition. Four months after Rydr's diagnosis, the family arrived at Duke University for an experimental treatment where his stem cell infusions would take place once a year over the next three years. When they arrived for the first visit, Rydr was more than a year old and incapable of sitting up on his own. Three months after the first infusion, the little boy was crawling. After the second infusion, improvements continued. His verbal skills began developing and soon he was walking. Rydr received his third and final infusion in 2011. To date, his cognitive ability is at age level and his motor control continues to improve with ongoing physical therapy. Researchers continue to investigate the role that cord blood may play in treating the effects of cerebral palsy.
